Grace Irene (Brandt) Binder, 89, of Hummelstown, passed away on Sunday, February 5th in the Life Care Hospital of Mechanicsburg. She was born in Philadelphia on July 24, 1922. She was a 1943 graduate of Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA, and also met her husband of 60 years there, Frederick Moore Binder, and married him shortly after graduation in South Bend, Indiana, while he was attending Naval Officers' Training School. During World War II she taught high school History and in later years was employed as a full time and substitute teacher of History and English.
Mrs. Binder was a gracious first lady and hostess while her husband served as the Dean of Thiel College in Greenville, PA and president of Hartwick College, Oneonta,NY, Whittier College, Whittier, CA, and Juniata College,Huntingdon, PA. Mrs. Binder accompanied her husband on a Fulbright Scholarship to Yugoslavia, where they lived while Dr. Binder taught at several universities. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Binder served as Associate Commissioner for Higher Education for the State of New York. After retiring from Juniata in 1986, the Binders moved to Leeds, England, where Dr. Binder taught American History at the University of Leeds. They enjoyed traveling throughout their lives and finally retired to the Hershey area.
Mrs. Binder enjoyed playing bridge and doing difficult crossword puzzles in the New York TImes and Wall Street Journal, of which she was a daily reader, and double-crostics. She was extremely interested in politics and an avid reader. She always kept her keen sense of humor and bright optimistic view of the world around her.
Mrs. Binder was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Moore Binder, Ph.D. She is survived by her daughters, both attorneys, Janet Binder Houts, of San Diego, CA, and Roberta (Robin) Binder Heath of Huntingdon, PA. and their families, son-in-law, John Houts, Esq.,: grandson, Frederick Houts, M.D. ; granddaughter Kathryn Houts Houlihan and her husband, Aaron; great-grandchildren, Abigail Houlihan and Sean Houlihan. She is also survived by son-in-law Richard Heath, grandson Connor Heath, and step-grandsons, Andrew Heath and Derek Heath.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 11th, at 11:00 AM in the Hoover Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. Hershey with her godson, The Right Rev. Dr. David L. Moyer officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00AM until time of service. Inurnment will be private in Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Frederick M.
